Umina vs Barnstoneworth O45C2 – Round 5 Match Report
The 45C2’s were finally able to play their first game in their Round 5 fixture vs UMI at McEvoy Oval, a ground that none of us knew even existed prior to this match. With such a disrupted pre-season, we weren’t really sure what to expect from ourselves but at least we didn’t have players introducing themselves to each other before kick off like in some previous seasons! It was therefore very pleasing to see us start off really solidly, with our midfield controlling the tempo, our defenders looking resolute and our forwards looking dangerous.
With several good chances going begging early on, we were awarded a penalty on 15 minutes for a handball in the box, which Ed lashed home to put us 1-0 up. Our continued dominance was again rewarded when Smiffy went on a mazy run from RB through most of their team to smash the ball home from 12 yards, allowing us to take a 2-0 lead into the break. More of the same after the restart saw us continuing to dominate UMI and our lead was further extended by some good lead up play creating an opportunity for new recruit Gunther to slot his first goal for us after a lung-busting run to get in the end of a square ball. Shortly after, Alvaro added our fourth when his perseverance in harrying the UMI defence paid off, with a well taken shot from 18 yards. James then rounded off the scoring with a poked home effort after a scramble in the six yard box from a corner, to take us to 5-0. Despite UMI trying to take the game to us in the second half, we never really looked in danger of conceding and the only negative was the way we seemed to lose shape after substitutions but that’s something that we can easily address going forward. MOTM was our Captain Ant who marshalled the team brilliantly all game, whilst the Scrotum Medal winner was Tanit for yet another of his priceless ‘sniper on the grassy knoll’ moments in attack. 😂
