Entrance 2 vs BUFC Bs

Much to our surprise given the rainfall of biblical proportions in the week leading up to the game, round 3 saw us travel to Pat Morley Oval to play the table-topping Entrance 2. After our disappointing last minute loss in round 2, the focus was very much on keeping our discipline right to the final whistle, which would hopefully allow us to stay in touch the top 3 teams who had all bagged maximum points so far.

Despite all the rain, the pitch was in surprisingly good shape and we were all looking forward to the game. Having never played against our opponents before, we were unsure of what to expect but with a positive mindset and through sticking to our structures, we managed to largely take control of the game. Despite this and after creating a number of very scoreable chances, we failed to convert any and so the scores were deadlocked 0-0 at half time.

More of the same ensued in the second half but despite our continuing to create enough chances to win several games, the score remained stubbornly locked at 0-0. With 10 minutes to go, we thought that we finally had the breakthrough we deserved when Jorge Arias converted a chance after a great 1-2 with Frank Budde but this was unfortunately ruled out by the linesman with a very dubious offside decision. After their keeper produced a full-length dive and tip round the post from another of Jorge’s efforts, we could almost sense that it wasn’t going to be our day!

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to make the most of our dominance and as is always the way when you are pushing for a win, the final whistle sounded all too soon with the points shared. It really would not be an exaggeration to say we could have won by 4 or 5 goals and so it looks like we will need to practice our finishing at training this week, in order to improve our conversion ratio.

Man of the match was Geoff Channels, who was no doubt pleased to celebrate a clean sheet on his return to the team.
