The Entrance 1 vs BUFC B’s

Round 6 saw us away to top of the table The Entrance 1, who had only dropped 2 points thus far in the competition, so were expected to be tough opponents. Despite our relative league positions, we started the better of the two sides and deservedly took the lead through a thunderous free kick from Neal, which he hit into the side netting from fully 25 metres. Unfortunately our opponents were level within 5 minutes when their left back went on a mazy run and unleashed his own bullet into the bottom corner from 20 metres. Thankfully this setback only seemed to spur us on and we deservedly retook the lead after Jorge was put through by Shorty, with our talisman striker finishing brilliantly across their keeper with his weaker foot. Shortly after, Adam smashed a great shot against the crossbar from 18 metres, only for us not to follow it in to finish the chance off. Unfortunately we conceded a soft equaliser before the break when their striker crashed his own shot against the bar, with it being adjudged to have crossed the line before bouncing out.

Despite the tough call of a second equaliser, we were in positive mood at half time, having played our best 40 minutes of the season so far. The second half became something of an arm wrestle with chances few and far between and both sides working hard to neutralise the other. The stalemate was broken after 20 minutes when the opposition struck a 25-metre thunderbolt into the top corner, which gave Geoff no chance. Even this setback didn’t dent our resolve and 5 minutes later, Gregor scored the goal of the game with a vicious left-footed drive from at least 25 metres, which bore all the hallmarks of a Roberto Carlos effort by swerving inside the right upright right at the last. With the scores level for a third time, both teams would probably have settled for a point from what had been a great game but unfortunately for us, our opponents headed home a winner from a corner with 5 minutes remaining that we just couldn’t respond to. Whilst it was a disappointing end to the game, our performance and the quality of the goals scored by both sides had made for a great contest.

Man of the match was Gregor, whose goals seem to just get better with every passing game.

Final Score: The Entrance 4 – Barnstoneworth 3
