Barnstoneworth BN vs Killarney Match Report
Round 12 saw us face off against Killarney for our first-ever competitive game on Terry Oval, a venue we knew well from all those Wednesday night training sessions.
With our numbers still depleted we were fortunate to be able to call on some further assistance from our 45A’s, with Phil Lisle, Dom Parkinson and Jim McLaren all backing up for us to ensure we could maintain our rotations.
Having found our opponents tough competitors in round 5, we knew were in for another hard game but given the bouncebackability (thank you for that phrase Gordon Strachan!) we had shown in the previous game, we just needed to ensure that we maintained our focus to get the required result.
The compact size of the Terry Oval pitch provided little room for any expansive play and a tight contest saw few clear opportunities for either side, although Frank was unlucky to see one effort come back off the post, so it was honours even at the break.
With the second half appearing in danger of serving up more of the same, we elected to shuffle our pack a little and move John into the midfield after 20 minutes. This proved to make the difference we needed and shortly after, he went on a rampaging run capped by a thunderous shot from fully 25 yards that cannoned in off the underside of the crossbar. That proved to be the highlight of the half and we were able to see the game out for a hard fought 1-0 win.
This was another satisfying result, which allowed us to open up an 8 point lead at the top of the table but we cannot let that allow ourselves to become complacent and the challenge will be to ensure that we continue to turn up every week.
The man of the match award went to John for his cracking and decisive strike, whilst the Scrotum medal went to Dougie ‘Mr Consistency’ White for another shot that would have gone out for a throw in but for Dom keeping it in!
Final Score: Barnstoneworth 1 – 0 Killarney
