BUFC Bs vs Kanwal

After our big win in the opening round, we were all looking forward to our round 2 game against Kanwal, which had been moved from Terry Oval Eastern Road Oval, Bateau Bay. It was certainly the first time we had played there as a team and despite the pitch being a little soft in some areas and the grass being longer than might have been ideal, it looked like playing okay.

Kanwal had proved to be worthy opponents in 2014 and proved to be much the same this time around with the game turning out to be an arm wrestle for much of the first half at the end of which the score was locked at 0-0.

With things looking like continuing in much the same vein for the first 10 minutes of the second half, our sweeper Stewart Hannan decided to take things into his own hands. After picking up possession well inside our half, he then proceeded to go on a mazy run before unleashing a left-footed shot from 20 yards (although he reckons it was closer to 30!) that went in off the underside of the crossbar and the inside of one post.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to make the most of the breakthrough and conceded a soft equaliser from a corner kick some 10 minutes later. The arm wrestle continued for the remainder of the half until we seemingly got carried away with chasing the win and ended up over-committing to an attack, which saw us punished with Kanwal scoring a second on a counterattack with literally the last kick of the game.

It was a gut-wrenching way to lose a game that had looked for all money like ending honours even and we will need to make sure that we look to respect a point earned going forward rather than throwing all 3 away. Not sure if we were overconfident after destroying Southern Ettalong the week before or if the sticky conditions were a factor but hopefully we will learn the lesson and get things back on track in the next round.

Man of the match was Shorty, who got through a ton of work in the midfield despite the taxing conditions.

Final Score: BUFC Bs 1 – 2 Kanwal
