Kanwal vs Barnstoneworth B North Report
With our opponents surprisingly forfeiting our Round 9 game and round 10 being washed out giving us a two week break, round 11 saw us facing Kanwal for the first time in the season on their patch.
With our numbers depleted due to injuries and other commitments, we were forced to call in reinforcements from the 45A’s in the form of Phil Lisle and Dom Parkinson, in order to have enough troops for the battle.
Having not played our opponents up to this point of the season we were unsure what to expect and the reality turned out that Kanwal are a strong side, with the first half shaping up as a titanic arm wrestle. With a few minutes to go to the half time whistle, Neal flashed a low hard cross into the Kanwal box and after some pinball moments, Phil Lisle snuck in at the back post to put us 1-0 up.
With Shaun’s half time words of wisdom about a clean sheet being enough to win the game ringing in our ears, we set out to see the contest out and grab a second goal to give us some insurance but Kanwal had other ideas and threw everything they had at us. Whilst we were forced onto the back foot, our defence was holding firm and with minutes remaining, it looked like we were going to hold on for a hard earned win but with 30 seconds to go, we made an uncharacteristic error in defence that led to us conceding an equaliser.
With the referee blowing his whistle quite literally immediately after the restart, we were absolutely gutted at not being able to hold out just a little longer.
As disappointing as letting the win slip away was, the result was fair on our opponents and given the number of players absent, the point was hard earned and had to be respected.
Perhaps for the first time in our team history, both the man of the match award and the Scrotum
medal went to Tom ‘keep your eye on the ball’ Reilly.
Final Score: Kanwal 1 – 1 Barnstoneworth B North
