BUFC A Vs Umina

Venue- Duffys Oval

For the first time in 5 seasons BUFC A’s had a home game at Duffys Oval against last years premiers Umina.

The game started off at a frantic pace with both sides trying to gain the early initiative.

After 14 minutes Ashley ‘moonwalker’ Burford broke into the box and through pure determination and dazzling foot work rounded the keeper and slotted home the first goal.

The game was fought out mainly in the midfield with both sides enjoying possession but failing to make clear opportunities and failing to capitalise on any half chances.

With half-time approaching a mistake by the BUFC defence allowed the Umina striker a clear opportunity from six yards out, but Darren’ The Cat’ Bennett made a

fantastic point blank save to maintain the 1-0 lead going into half-time.

At the break Umina came out looking to lift the tempo even further and started pushing more players forward which gave BUFC the chance to counter attack with the

pace of Gavin and Craig up front looking to seal the game.

Umina had the better of the first 20 minutes in the second half but with BUFC midfield closing down the space and the organised defence not giving the Umina forwards a sniff at goal there was

little to trouble Darren in goal.

Again for the third game running BUFC had clear penalties turned down, both the linesman and referee missed 2 blatant hand balls in the area.

With 15 minutes left BUFC gave away a freekick just outside the 18yard box, the shot was hit sweetly and took a deflection and was heading for the bottom righthand corner, when from

nowhere the diving frame of Darren came to the rescue to make a magnificent save and push the ball around the post.

Umina kept pushing players into the BUFC last third to grab an equaliser and in the 74th minute an attack broke down, BUFC quickly counter attacked with Craig Northey delivering a

perfectly timed through ball onto Ashley who managed to stay on his feet despite the Umina defenders efforts and moonwalked around the keeper for his well deserved 2nd goal to make it 2 -0.

Like good champions Umina battled to the end but failed to breakdown the well organised and solid defence who along with Darren have only conceded 1 goal in 4 games and 3 clean sheets in a row.

It was pleasing to hear the final whistle and BUFC and Umina produced an entertaining well matched game but thankfully we came away with the points on this occasion.

There were so many good performances with Darrens’ heroics in goal, Nic ‘take no prisoners’ Moulis and Andy ‘Doesn’t eat all the pies’ Yates outstanding in the centre of defence and many more

that contributed to such a fine performance.

However man of the match went to Ashley for the tireless work and goals in either half which was the difference between the teams.
